Google's next mobile operating system update is called Android 6.0 Marshmallow and it has already started an international roll out to many devices.

As is tradition, it comes pre-installed on Google's latest Nexus devices - the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P - and it quickly pushed out an update for previous generation Nexus phones and tablets soon after.

But any new Android release kicks off the furore surrounding upgrades for the rest of the Android device-owning community. When will I get Android Marshmallow? Who will get Marshmallow first? We're pulling all the details together so you have one easy stop to see when you'll get your next Android upgrade for your smartphone or tablet.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow release date

Google's Android 6.0 Marshmallow made its debut at the start of October for current Nexus device users in the US and it should have already rolled out to other regions.

It was officially released in final form on 5 October 2015, with he final build available for those who wanted to collect the source files and update their Nexus devices. However, OTA updates should be available to most, if not all, supported Nexus phones and tablets by now.

The new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P were released on 22 October, and they both have it pre-installed.

Android 6.0.1 was officially released on 7 December 2015 and in most cases, we'd expect updates to arrive on this latest version.

We've given the Android 6.0 Marshmallow preview a thorough review so you know what to expect when it does hit your device.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Nexus devices

Android Marshmallow (Android 6.0) started rolling out to Nexus 5, 6, 7, and 9 from 5 October. There should be updates for the Nexus Player too for users of the device in the US. The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P come with Android 6.0 already pre-installed.

The Android 6.0.1 factory images are available for those who want to manually update their phones if they haven't received the OTA version yet.

We also received reports a while back that the Nexus 9 in the UK has the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow too (thanks to Tony for the tip).

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: BlackBerry

That's right, we now have BlackBerry on the Android update list. With the Priv launching on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, the company hasn't committed to a confirmed timeline for Marshmallow, but did tell Android Central that it would be some time in 2016.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: HTC

Unlike the other manufacturers out there, HTC operates a 90-day promise for updates, as well as promising that your device will be updated for two years following its release. In reality, 90 days is a target and some might get that update, while others might have to wait a little longer as it rolls-out in different regions.

HTC confirmed that the HTC One M9 and One M8 will get an update at "beginning end of 2015", and the One M9 and A9 are still on target for December, according to Mo Versi, head of product management at HTC.

Other HTC devices will also be getting updated to the new Google Android operating system.

Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, but it looks like Honor will be getting its Marshmallow sweetness a little later than Huawei, if the timeline from Honor India is anything to go by. The company tweeted to say that Marshmallow would be arriving in February 2016 to the following devices:

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: LG

LG announced that LG G4 owners will get the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update from the week beginning 19 October... in Poland. The rest of the supported regions in Europe, Asia and the Americas - including the UK and US - will "follow".

Traditionally, that could mean a wait until early the following year, so we'd expect to see the update hit other LG G4 handsets in January or February 2016.

It also seems likely that the LG G3 will get Android 6.0, as it previously appeared as an option on a Korean LG support page.

LG will officially confirm and publish an upgrade schedule soon, however.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Motorola

Motorola is a fast mover when it comes to Android updates. Thanks to minimal additions on devices, Motorola has sometimes updated as fast, or even faster, than some Nexus models.

The roll-out started initially in Brazil and India, for the 2015 Moto X Style (third-gen) and 2014 Moto X (second-gen). Now we've had reports that the latter has been updated more widely around the globe, including in the US and UK. An OTA update has started to hit Moto X (2014) devices.

We also know from personal experience that the new Moto X Force has received an over-the-air update.

We had heard that Motorola confirmed that it was in the approval process for the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (third-gen) so it is highly possible that has received its update by now too.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Nvidia

Nvidia was swift when it came to getting the last Android update (Lollipop) to its Shield Tablet and it has been equally speedy getting Marshmallow to the current device. The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 now has an over-the-air Android 6.0 update waiting for you to install, if you haven't already.

Strangely, although the original Shield Tablet shares the same processor, graphics chipset and many other internal tech as the K1, it doesn't have the update yet. There's currently no word from Nvidia on whether it plans to update that model too.

The company announced at CES 2016 that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is heading to Shield Android TV however so that will be ready soon for installation. Nvidia has also said it will be enhancing the startup process on Shield Android TV meaning fewer steps before you get to your favourite apps, movies and games.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: OnePlus

OnePlus has confirmed that Marshmallow is coming to the OnePlus 1, and that Cyanogen OS will be updated sometime in early 2016. The OnePlus Two with Oxygen OS will be updated in Q1 2016. OnePlus confirmed it will use the native support for the fingerprint scanner in Marshmallow. The OnePlus X will also get updated, but there's no word on a timeframe.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update: Samsung

Last OS update, Samsung had its version rolling out 31 days after the Google launch. But not all phones actually got it right away. Variations in network can play a role here, and some see quite a delay. It also looks like Samsung is running a phased roll-out, if a timeline that appeared on Times News is correct.

The first phase of Samsung handsets were tipped to land in December 2015, but we're still yet to hear any official confirmation. Those devices were:

A leaked release schedule from Samsung Viet supports most of these dates. It claims updates for Q1, 2016 will arrive on the Galaxy Note 4, Note 4 Duos, Note Edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, S6 Duos, Galaxy S5, S5 Neo and S5 LTE-A.

The source slates tablet updates for Q2 for the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Tab A, Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 and Tab S2 8.0.

PESHAWAR HIGH COURT DIRECTS PTA TO BLOCK ILLEGAL SIMs

PESHAWAR HIGH COURT (KPK) DIRECTS (PTA) PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION AUTHORITY TO BLOCK ALL ILLEGAL SIMs WHICH WERE ISSUED.

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court on Tuesday directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block all illegal and unregistered SIMs (subscriber identity module) of Afghan and Pakistani cellular phone companies within 15 days as these had been mostly used in acts of terrorism, kidnapping for ransom and extortion.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan and Justice Nisar Hussain also ordered the PTA to conduct a survey to determine how many SIMs had so far been activated by the cellular phone companies during last five years and the income received through them; how many of the SIMs were operational in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; and why the Afghan companies were permitted to operate here without understanding the repercussions as well as studying the international laws in this regard.

The bench put on notice the PTA, provincial police officer (PPO), provincial home secretary and additional chief secretary Fata and directed them to file comments in the case. Next date of hearing would be fixed later.

The bench also directed the PPO to provide details about how many persons were kidnapped this year and how many of these persons were set free after they paid ransom to the kidnappers so that the said Court directs PTA to block illegal SIMs amount could be recovered from the provincial government and paid to them.

The bench was hearing a writ petition filed by a local businessman, Atif Haleem, who has challenged the functioning of unregistered and illegal phone SIMs in the province. He stated that despite earlier directives issued by the court the PTA and phone companies had not been taking interest in the issue.

The petitioner stated that in most of the crimes especially extortion, kidnapping for ransom and acts of terrorism these unregistered SIMs had been used and when the police officials tried to trace the phone numbers the same could not be done as these were either unregistered or registered on different names. He stated that thousands of SIMs of Afghan companies were also operational in the country, especially FATA and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The petitioner stated that recently the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Sindh High Court had issued directives to the government for checking the illegal business of phone companies. He stated that recently the PTA chairman had claimed that the authority had blocked around 22 million SIMs, but he did not say anything about what action was taken against the persons possessing such SIMs.

A few weeks ago National Accountability Bureau’s deputy prosecutor general Jamil Khan had informed the court that over 40,000 SIMs of Afghan telecom companies had been operational in Pakistan and most of these were used in acts of terrorism. Referring to an inquiry conducted earlier on the orders of the high court, he stated that the SIMs of Afghan companies were generally used for hiding the callers’ identity.

The NAB official had stated that presently there were two mechanisms through which these SIMs had been operating: in some cases SIMs were activated in Afghanistan and used in tribal areas through the signals emanating from Afghanistan; and second, SIMs function because of roaming facility to the concerned Afghan company given by a Pakistani company.

ISLAMABAD: The ban on mobile number portability (MNP) ordered by the ministry of interior as part of its ‘counter-terrorism measures’ has dismayed cellphone users who feel deprived of their right to switch over to a network of their choice.

Under the MNP policy announced by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, cellphone users could switch to different networks while retaining their numbers.

“How can you snatch the right of 118 million customers to have a network of their own choice since they pay for your services,” Farhana Niaz, a mobile phone user of a leading cellular company, said.

According to PTA’s figures, 118m people are using the Global System for Mobile communication across the country.

The PTA decided to ban the MNP on Nov 9 at a meeting chaired by the interior minister since the facility was reportedly creating problems to track down anti-state elements.

Some sources said the ban might be reviewed by the PTA after Muharram.

“Some mobile phone operators have raised concerns over the ban on MNP because it will hurt the companies having limited users on their networks,” they said.The source said the MNP was beneficial to users because some companies had limited service in remote areas of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and they could switch to other networks if they faced problems.

However, a counter-terrorism official said: “We keep people under observation and track them down through their cellphones but now terrorists or other people under observation port out their numbers from one network to another.”

“Once a user switches to a new company because of MNP the new operator does not impose observation, call recording and message tracking on the number until it is approached by the security authorities,” he said.

While the MNP process is implemented in a couple of days, the user manages to remain off the radar for seven to 15 days.

The business head of a mobile phone company claimed that big firms having a major share of customers and revenue were against the MNP.

“The new entrants in the telecom market or small companies are always willing to offer good call rates and packages to new customers wishing to benefit from the MNP.”

A network engineer of a mobile phone company said: “Once we put a number under observation on the request of ‘sensitive institutions’ we regularly share their data with them. However, once a customer uses MNP, issues often arise. But the agencies are supposed to follow the number not the operator.”

“I think the security operators, the cellular network companies and the regulator should sit down and resolve the issue as cellphone use is always linked with terrorism and ordinary costumers have to suffer,” Saeed Ahmed Khan, a telecom analyst, said.

He said such measures would discourage investment by the telecom operators.

He said the telecom operators should take up the issue with the authorities jointly, otherwise “they will be the ultimate losers since they will lose business and the telecom industry will suffer because of continuing directives of the ministry”.

SIM Technology Announces 2011 Interim Results High-end ODM Projects to Start Shipment in 2H2011, Committed to Transitioning to High Value Added ODM for Future Sustainable Growth

(Hong Kong, 19 August 2011) – SIM Technology Group Limited (“SIM Technology” or the “Group”; SEHK stock code: 2000), a leading mobile handset and wireless communication module solutions developer in the PRC, announced its interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2011.

During the period under review, the Group’s revenue dropped to HK$1,265.4 million (1H 2010: HK$2,015.1 million), mainly due to the reduction in customer demand of mid- to low-end solutions in the open market handset segment and the lack of high-end ODM shipment. Gross profit declined to HK$123.2 million (1H 2010: HK$243.2 million) while gross profit margin was 9.7% (1H 2010: 12.1%). The Group incurred a net loss of approximately HK$18.7 million (1H 2010: profit of HK$108.2 million), translating into basic loss per share of HK1.2 cents (1H 2010: earnings per share of HK7 cents).

Nevertheless, as at 30 June 2011, the Group continued to maintain a strong financial position with net cash balances amounting to HK$508 million (31 December 2010: HK$511 million). The Board of Directors is confident about the business growth in 2H 2011, thus declared payment of an interim dividend of HK1 cents per share for the six months ended 30 June 2011 (1H 2010: HK2.5 cents).

Affected by the drastic drop in demand from open market handset customers, revenue derived from the handsets and solutions segment decreased to HK$934 million (1H 2010: HK$1,583 million) with a gross margin at 8.2% (1H 2010: 10.7%). Though revenue of 2G/2.5G handset solutions dropped by 53% compared with the last corresponding period, that of 3G/3.5Gsolutions rose by 74% due to the increase in sales of WCDMA solutions for the China Unicom network and CDMA solutions for the China Telecom network. The Group launched 118 (1H 2010:100) handset models and 41 (1H 2010: 46) handset platforms during 1H 2011.

The wireless communication modules segmental revenue declined by 25.4% to HK$273 million (1H 2010: HK$365 million) due to the decrease in sales of TD-SCDMA modules, while gross profit margin was maintained at 18.6%. Although increases in sales of 2.5G modules partly offset the drop in TD-SCDMA modules, the higher average selling price of TD-SCDMA modules has still resulted in a revenue decrease for the segment. The Group’s new SIM900 family of wireless modules is smaller, faster and offers exceptional value and is expected to be a growth driver of the segment in the future. The SIM900 family of modules commanded a higher gross margin relative to other modules during the period.

The display modules segment recorded a revenue of HK$58 million (1H2010: HK$67 million). In anticipation of the strong growth of smart phones, the Group was phasing out the low-end display business and upgrading its factory equipment to produce high-end LCD modules to support the Group’s ODM handset business. The Group also increased its R&D resources and production capability for manufacturing capacity touch panel (CTP) in 1H 2011.

The Group is making steady progress towards the business transition and is confident about prospects in the second half year, primarily due to the high-end ODM projects to be launched in the coming months. For example, it has already passed through the Japanese operator’s audit of its manufacturing facility in preparation to launching its first model in the Japanese market. Indeed, the Group believes that the demand of the two Japanese and two domestic ODM customers enables it to achieve its handset business target in the said period. The Group will continue to invest in the most advanced technology including development of 4G and high-end 3Gsmart phones and tablets to facilitate its transition.
